PANEER :   THE MOST FREQUENTLY ADULTERATED FOOD IN INDIA

A recent food safety study found that paneer is one of the most commonly adulterated (fake or mixed) foods in India.

  • In Noida and Greater Noida, 83 out of 100 paneer samples tested were not safe to eat.

  • About 40% of the samples had harmful chemicals or unknown substances.

Media reminders continue:

What You Can Do To Test?..

1. Buy smart : Look for FSSAI marks, check reputable brands or trusted dairies.

2. Do quick home tests: Iodine test for starch, Tap or dab to check texture/elasticity, Smell it-- chemically or plastic like odors are red flags.

3. Reported suspected products to local FSSAI or food safety authorities.

4. Prefer packed paneer with clear labelling and expiry details.

  • Stomach pain
  • Vomiting or food poisoning
  • Liver or kidney damage
  • Even long-term health risks like cancer (if formalin is present)

HEALTH RISK AND CUSTOMER AWARENESS
Many paneer samples across India have been found to be fake or unsafe. These often contain harmful substances like starch, detergent, palm oil, or even chemicals like formalin. Eating such paneer can cause stomach problems, nausea, cramps, allergic reactions, and may even lead to serious issues like liver or kidney damage. In some cases, long-term use could increase the risk of cancer. People online have also raised concerns. For example, if paneer turns blue or black after adding iodine, it likely has starch. Some fake paneer is made using palm oil, which is unhealthy. To stay safe, always buy paneer from trusted brands with FSSAI labels. You can test paneer at home—check its smell (it shouldn’t smell like chemicals), press it to see if it’s soft and fresh, and use simple tests like the iodine test to check for starch. Prefer packed paneer with proper labels and expiry dates. If you find anything suspicious, report it to food safety officials. FSSAI is working to stop this problem through lab tests and raids, but we also need to be careful as consumers.

CUSTOMER NATIONWIDE SURVEILLANCE & REGULATION

This means The government (through FSSAI and other food safety bodies) is checking and controlling food quality all over the country—not just in one city or state.

  • FSSAI launched a pan-India paneer survey (March 2025), directing collection of packed, loose, and analogue paneer samples. States were required to submit findings within a month.
  • In March 2025, FSSAI called for intensified surveillance of dairy analogues, especially during festival seasons, aiming to clamp down on misleading labelling and unsafe substitutes

 Enforcement & Raids

Fake report news

  • Mysuru (April 2025): FSSAI raided shops, collected paneer samples for chemical and microbial testing. Previous raids in August 2024 showed 2/9 samples were sub-standard or unsafe.
  • Dehradun (June 2024): A plant was raided for using acetic acid, palm oil, and arrowroot; adulterated goods were destroyed; samples sent for lab analysis Punekar News.
  • Ahmedabad (Feb 2025): Authorities seized 1,500 kg of adulterated paneer containing palm oil and acetic acid.
